Click here for my review of "Unleashing Mr. Darcy".
"Marrying Mr. Darcy" is the sequel to "Unleashing Mr. Darcy". It doesn't have quite the same charm and Pride and Prejudice vibe as it's predecessor does, but it succeeds as a cozy Hallmark romance.
"Marrying Mr. Darcy" begins with Mr. Darcy's proposal to Elizabeth. She of course accepts and everything seems great!
That is until Mr. Darcy's aunt intervenes. It isn't that she objects to their impending marriage. Oh, she is elated that the two Hallmark lovebirds are getting married. So much so that she tries, and in many ways succeeds, in running the show! Wait, is this her wedding or Elizabeth's?
Elizabeth does her best to keep the peace and, for the most part, she gives in to Mr. Darcy's controlling auntie. They do make some compromises, but they mostly favor the auntie, not Elizabeth.
So where is Mr. Darcy in all of this? Well, he's spending long days and nights at work, but what Elizabeth doesn't know is that he's planning to surprise his intended with a month long honeymoon. Whoa!! That's amazing! Only, Elizabeth thinks he's just spending a ton of time at work and she wonders if this is what married life with him will be like.
FINALLY, Elizabeth has just had enough. She eventually stands up for herself regarding wedding planning (well sort of), but then she gets so fed up with Mr. Darcy not being around much that she is seriously thinking of calling off the wedding.
But worry not. When Mr. Darcy realizes how upset his dearest Lizzy is (dude, how could she not be???) he tells her the truth. She is very grateful for what he's been doing, but says, rightfully so, that he should have told her. He agrees. She still has doubts about whether or not their marriage will work. He convinces her that it will.
As far as the wedding goes, Elizabeth compromises to some extent and agrees to two different ceremonies in two different wedding dresses!! I'd hate to see the final bill for all of that! But she does get the small garden ceremony in a simple wedding dress that she's always dreamed of, while Mr. Darcy's auntie gets the wedding (of Elizabeth and Donovan) that she's always wanted. I was disappointed that Elizabeth didn't get an autumn wedding like she originally wanted, though. I think that would have been lovely. (The reason it was moved to earlier in the year was because Mr. Darcy's auntie wanted it that way. Alrighty then!)
And I guess they live happily ever after. We won't know unless there's a follow-up to this one. So let's just assume the best until then.
I would love to see a follow-up, but I think it should also feature Elizabeth's sister and her relationship along with Mr. Darcy's sister's adventure in Montreal that he eventually agreed to allow her to go on. (Thanks, Elizabeth, for talking him into that.)
Elizabeth's sister is delightful and down-to-earth, just as she is in the original Pride and Prejudice. She is supportive of Elizabeth and encourages her to follow her heart when making decisions about her own wedding. I wish they had shown more of their sisterly relationship.
There's a subplot happening in all of this. Elizabeth is applying for a teaching position. She goes on an interview, but doesn't hold out too much hope for it. Of course, in true Hallmark fashion, she is in fact hired for this position.
So lots of life changes for the newlyweds. I wish them and their very adorable dogs (who had a minor, but charming role in this movie) the very best.
