Birds

Happy National Poetry Month!

When I was younger, I used to love writing poetry. The first time (and only time that I can remember) I entered a poetry contest, it was on my birthday. I didn't win, but it was so gratifying to simply be recognized. Other than that, I sometimes wrote poems for other people, but I mostly did it for myself. I had a notebook filled with poems I jotted down. I don't know where that notebook is, but I'm sure I still have it.

I don't know why I stopped writing poetry. I guess life happened and I just got on a different course. Poetry is always on my mind, though. Often times, I think in poetry, but rarely write it down. With April being National Poetry Month, I decided now is the time to pick it up again. I've also begun reading more poetry.

I'm the kind of person who thrives with structure, so I knew I did not want to write in the form of free verse. I've written many haikus, so I decided to try something different. I chose the cinquain because it's usually very short and it has a certain structure. What I didn't realize until after I read more about it was that there are sooooo many different types of cinquains! I decided to keep with tradition (because I love traditions) and write one in the original format.

I knew I wanted to use this picture I took on my walk today as inspiration. However, I ended up going in a completely different direction than what I originally intended. Instead of writing about what is shown in the picture, I ended up writing about what I could hear and see, but not what is clearly visible in the picture.

Joyful, spirited
Dawning, singing, playing
 Music to my ears
Frolickers

Have you written poetry? I'd love to read it if you'd like to share!
