I haven't made new year's resolutions for several years now. Not in the way they're usually made anyway. For the past few years, I've resolved to follow my heart and be open to change. I still believe it is important to do that and I will keep that in mind this year as well.
However, I am making another resolution. Reading has always been a challenge for me. Reading comprehension was my least favorite subject (along with Social Studies) in school. Interestingly, reading was one of my favorite subjects to instruct as a second and third grade teacher. As an adult, I've grown to love it.
But it remains a challenge for me, which is why I have been avoiding reading books for so long. I have made failed attempts to finish books over the past couple of years. I'm a slow reader because I like to fully absorb what I'm reading. If I come across a word that I am not familiar with, I use context clues to try and figure it out and I also take the time to look it up. For the longest time, I've viewed being a slow reader as something negative. However, it recently occurred to me that it's actually an asset. I like to go deep. Nothing wrong with that!
I love to write and I want to become a better writer. At some point, I want to publish a book. If I'm going to publish a book I need to be reading them first! So this year, I resolve to read more books. I plan to accomplish this by setting monthly, weekly, and daily goals. I will read one book a month. The weekly and daily goals depend on how long the book and its chapters are.
I will combine this goal with other hobbies. I will post on my blog reviews of each book I read. This will incorporate my love of writing. I also have a section in my bullet journal where I will take notes, including new words and phrases I learn. I will incorporate my beading hobby by making custom bookmarks specifically for each book I read.
So look for my book reviews on my blog this year - one for each month!
