I'm grateful for the wonderful weekend that I had. I "attended" the Abilities Virtual Experience 2 and it was a blast! It was even bigger and better than the previous one earlier this year. I enjoyed getting a taste of the arts, like collage-making, music, dancing, and interviews with disabled people in the entertainment industry.
I also gained insight from some of the country's (and world's even) most prominent disability activists - people who have had a strong voice in disability rights for decades. Hearing them speak live ignited a fire in me to continue their legacy by doing my part in creating change. Listening to them also made me realize how much I don't know about the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act), which means my first step is to educate myself. I plan to learn more about other disability legislation as well. Many resources were provided and I've already looked into some of them.
Being someone who is passionate about clean eating and good nutrition, I was also very impressed with the nutritionist's presentation. She is disabled and she specializes in nutrition for people with disabilities (which honestly doesn't seem much different, if at all, from good nutrition in general). In her talk, she focused on building a strong immune system primarily through food. I was already aware of her suggestions, but they served as good reminders. Although what I do eat is mostly healthy, I have forgotten about some foods, so I will make an effort to incorporate them into my diet. It's good to know people like her are getting the word out there!
I will have access to the events for another two weeks on demand and I do plan on revisiting some of them. I took lots of notes and I plan on putting what I learned into practice in various ways.
W is for walks.
