I had heard not-so-great reviews of "Captain Marvel" long before I watched it. However, after having watched all of the MCU movies before it and being so impressed with most of those, I came into this with an open mind. With a name like "Captain Marvel", being in the Marvel Universe, and it being the first MCU "character" movie featuring a woman superhero, I thought maybe, just maybe, this one would be a winner with me.
Not so much.
It seemed like this movie was meant to be a female version of "Top Gun". They even named the cat Flerken after one of the main characters in "Top Gun"! While "Top Gun" may not have earned the best of reviews, it is a classic, in my opinion. Marvel should not have gone there. Some of the "Top Gun"-like scenes seemed cheesy to me.
What stood out to me the most with this movie had nothing to do with the characters and the plot. It was that most of the movie was filmed in very low lighting. I understand this is sometimes done for effect, but I found it bothersome throughout the movie.
I had heard that in this movie it would be revealed how Nick Fury lost his eye. I understand wanting to have a plot twist around this, but I was disappointed and confused that it was Goose who did that to him. Earlier in the movie, there was a bit of a teaser where Agent Coulson's imposter was the one who injured Nick Fury's eye. I would have been far more impressed if this was the real reason why it happened. And then in the mid-credits scene, the cat regurgitates the tesseract. That was just weird to me.
Being someone who loves animals, especially cats, I was horrified when Goose was thrown. I re-watched that one scene several times and realized the cat was probably not really thrown. They edited it to make it look like he was. So that put my mind at ease a bit...but still.
Although I was not impressed with this movie overall, there were some aspects of it that I liked, especially when I watched it a second time. I thought the plot twist was clever, even though the execution of it wasn't great. Up to this point, I've been very impressed with the casting of the superheroes. Not this time. I felt that the women in "Black Panther" would have made for better Captain Marvels. But I did enjoy how the plot unfolded with the twist that I was not expecting.
I really like how Marvel brings characters back in a respectable way even after we've lost them. They do this without always bringing them back to life, which would get redundant. I didn't think Agent Coulson's age was believable, but Nick Fury's was. I was very happy to see both of them and I even got chills when the Marvel music started playing as they entered the movie for the first time.
I loved, loved, loved the sequence of scenes that showed Captain Marvel getting back up each time she fell and that it came with the line, "You're right. I'm only human". And that was followed by her removing the implant, which allowed her to reach her full potential. That entire scene was very powerful to me. It was probably my favorite scene in the movie.
Actually, now that I'm focusing on some of the good points, I feel like I need to watch "Captain Marvel" again and give it yet another chance. I will wait, though.
"Endgame" is up next!
Remember when Tony realised the suffering his weapons bring and decided to use his technology for good? Remember when Thor and Doctor Strange learned humility? Remember when Captain Marvel gained her memories back and uhm... that didn't change anything? Then she became super powerful and that eliminated her self doubt, which was nice. But at the same time she had this smug attitude throughout and now her new unlimited power isn't feeding her ego? And now she even wants to save the universe? It's a hard sell.
ReplyDeleteIt's very hard to enjoy a movie when the protagonist isn't likable.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Mihail! :-) I think part of the problem was that her character wasn't developed enough. I feel like there's more to her that we could have seen, but didn't. The movie had a lot of potential, I think. It was a missed opportunity.
