By the time I finished watching this 2020 Academy Award winning Best Picture, I felt like I had just disembarked from...no, wait...was thrown off from, a wild and crazy roller coaster ride and I was immensely grateful to have not been injured in the process. "Parasite" was the adventure of a lifetime. That's not necessarily a good thing in my book, but it's also not a bad thing.
I can see why this movie earned top honors this year. It has a lot of depth and is filled with one interesting surprise after another. Some of those surprises will warm your heart, while others will break your heart. It made me feel something, a lot of things, in fact. That is the mark of a good movie. There are also many deep themes that can spark courageous conversations. Anything that gets us talking in a respectable way is a good thing.
I thought the subtitles would be more challenging to follow than they
turned out to be. I was able to understand the story line even though I
didn't read every single word that came on my t.v. screen. I read enough
to know what was going on.This was the first international movie I've ever watched entirely in subtitles and I wouldn't have considered it if a friend didn't mention it. It's just not the kind of movie that usually interests me. I didn't even know about it until my friend suggested I add it to my watch list. My first thought was, "Is this a Marvel movie?" After all, I was on a Marvel run at the time. How wrong I was!
It will probably come as no surprise to you that I didn't like the foul language and I once again felt as though emotions could have been effectively conveyed without using it. In the movie's final scenes I felt uncomfortable and depressed, yet I also felt reassured and happy.
I had "Parasite" on reserve at the library. And apparently, everyone else did, too. I was above number 200 on the waiting list, and with the ongoing lock down due to the pandemic, it was going to be even longer before I got to see it. However, I was happy to find out it's on the free streaming service I didn't know I had until recently. When the movie was over, the streaming service asked me to choose "like" or "dislike". I almost didn't choose anything because I thought it was an impressive movie, but it was too heavy on the foul language and gore for me to say I liked it. Even though the gore didn't really become a factor until closer to the end, it was powerful enough to have a lasting effect on me. Ultimately, I chose "dislike" because the streaming service will use my response to determine my suggestions for future movies. So, to sum it all up, "Parasite" isn't my cup of tea, but if you don't mind foul language and gore, then my guess is you'll probably find this movie quite entertaining and thought-provoking.
Your turn. :-)
This was a confusing movie. I understand what happened. And I understand why it happened and why the characters did what they did. But I don’t know what am I supposed to feel. I wish I had someone to root for, but there are neither heroes nor villains here. Everyone gives reasons to both despise and pity them. Who was the parasite? They all were and that’s why no one got a happy ending.
ReplyDeleteMihail, it certainly was confusing in that way. However, I found myself rooting for everyone. Not that I thought anyone was a hero, but I wanted them all to overcome what was happening and make different choices. I guess I was rooting for some or all of them to emerge as heroes. I did feel like the son genuinely changed at the end and I was glad he found out where is father was. Those two points left me feeling some sort of comfort even though it was still a tragedy.
