In the early 1960's, jousting became the state sport of Maryland. With that, Maryland became the first state to adopt a sport. I am not sure why jousting was chosen to represent Maryland, except that those who came up with the idea, enjoyed it. There are jousting competitions in Maryland, but I have only seen ones that were staged (Medieval Times Dinner Theatre and the annual Renaissance Festival).
Given that jousting somehow represents Maryland, I was intrigued by the fact that there's a whole movie about this sport, but that intrigue came only after "A Knight's Tale" was recommended by a friend and I watched the trailer. I had planned on watching it anyway, but when I found out it centered around jousting, well that was the cherry on top. (As a side note, I don't like cherries. In fact, I'm also allergic to them. Just pretend here that I eat them.)
When a movie set in medieval times begins with an iconic 70's rock song, you know right away that movie cannot be taken seriously. Not completely, anyway. This movie was mostly comedy, but it was more than that. There was a decent, heartfelt storyline with a bit of romance weaved into it. All of the characters were appealing, but especially the late great Heath Ledger. He was absolutely charming in this movie. He reminded me of Thor, which is never a bad thing. And what a pleasant surprise to see the actor who plays Vision in the Marvel movies. I prefer his character as Vision, but it was fun to see a familiar face in "A Knight's Tale".
When I watch a movie, I want to be entertained and moved. This movie had both effects on me, which is why it earned four out of five stars and a heart from me. Even the uniquely bizarre soundtrack was good. "A Knight's Tale" deserves another watch at some point. The only reason I did not give it a fifth star (the highest rating) is because, unfortunately, I temporarily lost interest a few times. I can't put my finger on why that happened, but I was always drawn back into it. This sometimes happens when I watch movies for the first time. It's like I can't grasp all of the details all at once. I need an overview. I have a feeling next time around, my experience will be even better.
