I finally got to see "Eternals", now that it is streaming on Disney Plus! Woohooo!!!
This 2021 Marvel movie received poor reviews from critics, and because of that, I didn't have high expectations. Those I know personally who saw it before me had other thoughts. Some enjoyed it immensely and some thought it was good, but that it didn't measure up to the Avengers movies.
I agree with the latter. I guess it's good to go into a movie with low expectations because I was pleasantly surprised it was actually pretty good. It had all the makings of a classic Marvel movie with action scenes, raw emotion, and just the right amount and kind of humor. (I would LOVE to see Thor and Kingo star in their own movie!). The action scenes with the Deviant were good, but not great. I found myself laughing at how fake some of those scenes looked. Of course, it is fake because it's a movie, but I've seen more believable eye candy action scenes in Marvel movies before. They just didn't captivate me the way I'm conditioned to be captivated with Marvel action scenes.
The plot was engaging and it unfolded differently than I expected (a positive in my book). One of my favorite characters in this movie was Ikaris. And I loved him more because of his flaws. I'm not a huge fan of Angelina Jolie, but I was immensely impressed with her portrayal of Thena. Even the supporting cast was entertaining to watch. May we please see more of Karun in future movies?!
I love how Marvel is intentionally becoming more diverse in various ways. We live in a diverse world and this should be represented in Hollywood. I especially loved seeing a superhero with a disability (in this case, she's deaf) played by someone who has that disability in real life. The plot didn't center around her disability. She blended in with everyone else, which is the way it should be. They made it accessible for her by learning sign language and using it throughout the movie. This is the kind of visibility and authentic representation I like to see.
There were two main problems I could see with this movie, though. One is that it was too long. Two hours would have been perfect for my taste. The other problem (which is somewhat related to the first) was that there were too many main characters and concepts introduced, which meant that they could not be developed enough (even in a 2 and half+ hour movie). The up side to this, though, is that there is a lot of room for this franchise to grow. Based on what I've seen so far, I'm excited to find out what comes next for the Eternals.
Based on the trailers and the poor reviews I was expecting a straightforward "heroes vs monsters" movie. However, I was pleasantly surprised. There were complex relationships, inner struggle and twists, which all made the story much more interesting. This movie is long, but with so many characters it actually needs more time. The audience doesn't really get to properly bond with the characters and the resolutions of the many subplots feel rushed. It would have been better as a Disney+ series.
ReplyDeleteMihail, true! It does need more time and I agree a series would have been better.
