Being St. Patrick's Day, I decided to take a mini vacation from the Marvel Universe and instead watch a light-hearted, Irish-themed movie. I browsed through the free offerings on cable and discovered The Luck of the Irish. It is a Disney Channel original.
Kyle is a 15-year old high school student whose life is going incredibly well. He's a star basketball player who is well-respected by his peers and he just seems to have all the luck in the world, like when he randomly fills in answers on a multiple choice test...and gets them all correct.
Until one day, everything changes. (This sort of reminded me of what we're experiencing now with the COVID-19 pandemic...of course on a far larger and more serious scale than what happens in the movie.)
Kyle embarks on a journey to discover his heritage in preparation for Heritage Day at his school. His parents are reluctant to tell him anything, so he searches for the answers on his own. As you can imagine, there is Irish in his heritage. While this is a predictable element, the journey to find the answers is an unplanned, unexpected, and sometimes humorous, adventure filled with twists and turns. Throughout this process, Kyle not only discovers his heritage, but also the life lesson that hard work and a positive mindset, not luck, are really what make a difference.
While this was far from a blockbuster hit and I most likely will not watch it again next year, I will not fault a movie with no foul language, an engaging plot, good acting, and a strong message for adults and children alike. It was a fun and relaxing way to spend part of my day. Two thumbs up from me!
He was a leprechaun, wasn't he?
ReplyDeleteHe sure was! He realized this the hard way... :D
