Did you know that Spina Bifida is the most commonly occurring complex birth defect in the United States and affects over 166,000 Americans? According to the Spina Bifida Association the total average lifetime health costs for an infant born with Spina Bifida can exceed $1,000,000. As many of you know, I was born with spina bifida. Because of the love and support of family, friends, and doctors today I am blessed to be given the gift of another birthday.
Last year I participated in the Walk-n-Roll for Spina Bifida in my region with several supportive family members. This year I not only have the opportunity to participate, but I'm also on the planning committee for the regional Walk-N-Roll. These Walk-N-Roll events take place around the country throughout the year. The
Walk-n-Roll is a one-mile walk, or in my case it will be a roll with my
wheelchair, to raise awareness and money for the Spina Bifida
Among the many people I know and have known with spina bifida is
my best friend, Stephanie. I will again be participating in her
memory. This year will be bigger and better. I have decided to form a
team to participate with me. Together, we have already made a difference and I'm confident it will only get better.
When people asked me what I wanted for my birthday this year, I said one thing - their support for the Spina Bifida Association. It could be in the form of a donation, joining my team for free, or simply spreading the word about what spina bifida is, how we can help those living with it, and how it can be prevented. No material gift to me could ever replace the support for this worthy organization. I have come to realize over the years that there is no better gift than helping others. I have seen firsthand how the Spina Bifida Association improves the lives of those living with spina bifida and their families. This is an organization my parents were involved with when I was a child and now as an adult I am continuing their efforts. I do believe this organization played a pivotal roll in supporting my family as well as in helping me achieve what I have in life. I thank them for contributing to my gift of another birthday.
The Spina Bifida Association is a cause I feel very passionate about. I encourage you to find a cause that you you feel passionate about and support it any way that you can. You and so many others will reap the benefits.
