Monday's Musings - A Different Perspective on the Dress

Instead of sharing a quote today, I'd like to share my thoughts on the picture of the dress that went viral last week.

I know what you might be thinking.  "Not another post about the dress."  What I'm about to say is quite different than what you might expect, though.

There's been a lot of debate about what color the dress is.  While some people are annoyed with and tired of the attention it has received on social media, I happen to find the whole thing intriguing.  Not just the debate over the colors of the dress, but even more so the way people reacted to it.  Some people are still talking about what color the dress is, while others are downright tired of it.  Why do we see things so differently and what color is that dress anyway?

Here's the thing.  It doesn't matter.  What???  That's right.  It doesn't matter.  What does matter is this.

1. Two people can look at the same thing at the same time and see it in two completely different ways.  Many factors influence our perspective.  The way we see things isn't right or wrong.  It just is.

2. One person can look at something and then later look at that same thing and see it in a completely different way.  Our perspective on any given situation can change.  Sometimes all we need is a little break from looking at it.  A fresh look at it later often leads to a fresh perspective.  Sometimes our perspective doesn't change after taking a break, and guess what.  That's okay, too!

Coincidentally (or not), this perspective came to me the day after I first saw the photo of the dress.  Taking a break from it gave me a fresh perspective. ;)

The next time you and someone else disagree on something, think about this dress.  Become intrigued about their perspective.  Or, like some people did in the dress situation, let it go and move it.  Does it really matter?  Let's embrace our different perspectives, focus on what really matters, and make that celebration go viral the way this dress did.

On that note, which colors do you see in this necklace?

  1. I see gold, brown and a blue-ish periwinkle.
